Coaching: An Essential Part of Performance Management

Coaching: An Essential Part of Performance ManagementCoaching is an important part of any successful performance management program. It can improve performance in a time when we're asking employees to do more with less. It increases employee engagement. And coaching helps create knowledge transfer – which is critical as Baby Boomers begin to retire.

It can also significantly impact business outcomes. Research shows that organizations with highly effective development plans – a direct result of effective manager coaching – have twice the revenue per employee as those with ineffective development plans. And organizations that incorporate coaching have one and a half to two times better business results than organizations that rely solely on performance assessments or pay for performance.

A Shift in Sourcing Strategies: Does this Spell the End of Job Boards?

A Shift in Sourcing Strategies: Does this Spell the End of Job Boards?Recruiters are increasingly turning to job board aggregators (Indeed, Simply Hired), search engine optimization (Jobs2Web), and social media (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter) to source candidates – in particular technology savvy Gen Y-ers. These tools help organizations save money, reduce time to fill, and improve quality of hire.

In fact, our research shows that over 70% of organizations have begun using social networking for talent acquisition. And many – including 7-Eleven, Hyatt, and Dell – have significantly reduced their spend on job boards in favor of social networking and SEO. So what does this mean for the future of job boards?

Read on for insight into the fate of traditional job boards.

Three Imperatives to Transform Learning

Three Imperatives to Transform LearningChanging workforce demographics, a sluggish economy, and evolving technologies are putting pressure on learning organizations to do more than they have in the past – both for the workforce and business stakeholders. These organizations are expected to deliver ever-greater results and align more closely with business goals.

But there are real challenges to the transformation of the learning function. Learning professionals are being asked to do more with less while simultaneously addressing serious skills and leadership gaps, becoming more innovative and collaborative, and building stronger relationships with the business. If the learning organization fails to evolve, it risks becoming irrelevant.

Josh Bersin2011: Building the Borderless Workplace

Josh Bersin
CEO and President

Each December brings our predictions report, a comprehensive look at the 10 key HR and L&D priorities for the coming year. Our 2011 predictions, called Building the Borderless Workplace, are driven by the persistent trends we see toward growth and globalization. I'm looking forward to sharing these trends with you during my upcoming webinar, which will help to facilitate your planning and budgeting for 2011 and provide an opportunity for a Q&A session with me on my predictions.

At Bersin & Associates, our mission is to empower you and your organization to drive business results with world-class research and consulting. This goal, as well as our conversations with members and prospects this year, have led us to expand our business to cover many areas of learning and talent management. In each practice, we implement the same rigorous research and service model: studying the market and solution providers; understanding trends and best practices; developing maturity models and frameworks; developing Factbooks® and industry-specific benchmarking information; and providing you with in-depth case studies to learn how others solve problems.

In June, we introduced our Talent Acquisition practice, led by Madeline Laurano. As I discussed in my blog this week, Why Is It So Hard to Hire During the Recovery, the talent acquisition world is undergoing a revolution. Despite the high levels of unemployment in the U.S., companies are finding it very difficult to find the right people – largely because of the high number of applicants and lack of skills and mobility in the workforce. We happen to have an "illiquid labor market" right now, and new tools like social networking and candidate relationship management are transforming the world of recruiting.

The coming months will bring exciting new research on virtual classrooms, leadership development, pre-hire assessments, and much more. Winter also happens to be the season when we introduce our of technology research. Watch for the debuts of Learning Systems 2011, Talent Management Systems 2011, and Customer Satisfaction with Talent Management Systems.

I hope you enjoy our new newsletter format, and please contact me if you have feedback or questions about our research at info@bersin.com.
